Diflucan is an oral medication that helps get rid of yeast infections.

How Diflucan works

Diflucan treats yeast infections from the inside out. It penetrates deep into the vaginal tissues and stops the bacteria that cause yeast infections from multiplying.

How to take Diflucan

Take Diflucan exactly as prescribed by your doctor. For yeast infections, doctors normally prescribe one dose for treatment. However, your doctor may recommend taking multiple doses. In multiple-dose therapy, a double dose of Diflucan is often taken on the first day of treatment to quickly get the proper amount of medicine into your body.

Diflucan precautions

Do not take Diflucan if you are taking cisapride (Propulsid). Cisapride (Propulsid) is used to treat acid reflux disease. The combination can cause serious even fatal heart problems. During treatment, you should limit your alcohol consumption. Taking Diflucan with alcohol can affect your liver. Also, use caution when driving or performing other hazardous activities. Diflucan may cause dizziness. If you experience dizziness avoid these activities.

What to tell your doctor

Tell your doctor about all the medications you are taking in addition to medical conditions you are diagnosed with. If you have kidney disease, you may not be able to take Diflucan or you may require an adjustment to your dose. Do not take Diflucan without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant or nursing. The safety and effectiveness of Diflucan with pregnant or nursing women has not yet been determined.

Diflucan side effects

Stop taking Diflucan and seek medical attention immediately if you experience liver problems (pale stools, yellowish skin or eyes, abdominal pain, dark urine, etc.) or an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, closing of your throat, swelling of your lips, tongue, or face). Other less serious side effects that may occur while your are taking Diflucan include:

• Headache
• Dizziness
• Fatigue
• Itching
